Who Is Daniel A. Jost Beyond His Famous Family?
Celebrity biographies frequently define parents through their children’s success. Daniel A. Jost presents a more substantial story because his professional and community involvement can be documented independently.
For years, he worked in New York City’s public education system, teaching students on Staten Island. His career placed him within a community where schools, emergency services, and local institutions have longstanding connections.
Unlike his sons, Daniel did not pursue a career in television entertainment. Instead, his public recognition grew through his educational work, cultural involvement, and occasional family-related appearances.
In June 2025, the College of Staten Island reported that Daniel and his wife attended a ceremony honoring Colin with an honorary doctorate. The college explicitly identified Daniel as a retired teacher at Staten Island Technical High School.
That distinction matters. His public profile isn’t based solely on his connection to a celebrity.
Daniel A. Jost’s Career at Staten Island Technical High School
Education played an important role in shaping Daniel’s professional identity.
Staten Island Technical High School is a specialized public institution associated with academically demanding programs and preparation for technical fields. Working in such an environment puts educators alongside students as they develop interests in science, engineering, mathematics, and other disciplines.
Daniel A. Jost taught at the school before retiring from New York City’s public education system.
His teaching career is supported by more than celebrity biography websites. In a 2023 educational recording produced by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, Daniel personally identified himself as a retired New York City public school teacher.
The account provides direct evidence of his professional background rather than relying on information repeated across entertainment websites.
What Is Known About His Educational Background?
Several online profiles attribute particular university qualifications and engineering credentials to Daniel. However, those details need stronger independent documentation before they can be presented as established biographical facts.
His exact graduation dates, complete academic history, and teaching qualifications have not been consistently verified through authoritative public materials.
The confirmed point is straightforward: he had an established career as a public school educator and was working as a Staten Island teacher on September 11, 2001.
September 11, 2001: A Defining Chapter in His Public Story
One of the most revealing documented accounts of Daniel A. Jost’s life concerns the September 11 attacks.
That morning, he was teaching on Staten Island when an assistant principal entered his classroom with news that an aircraft had struck the World Trade Center.
For Daniel, the unfolding emergency presented two immediate responsibilities. He needed to support students, some of whom had family members working as first responders, while also confronting uncertainty about his own wife’s safety.
His wife, Dr. Kerry Kelly, served as the FDNY’s Chief Medical Officer and joined the emergency medical response in Lower Manhattan.
According to the 9/11 Memorial’s published account, Daniel helped students leave school and reunite with their families as the situation developed. He also received a message from Colin asking about his mother’s safety.
The account shows the personal and professional demands ordinary New Yorkers faced during an extraordinary crisis.
Preserving a Firsthand Account for Future Generations
In 2023, Daniel and Kerry participated in the National September 11 Memorial & Museum’s Digital Learning Experience.
Their recorded discussion explored how the attacks affected emergency medical personnel, schoolchildren, families, and the wider community.
The educational program invited students to consider how different responsibilities shaped the couple’s experiences.
Daniel’s participation has particular historical value because it preserves a teacher’s perspective on September 11, complementing the accounts of firefighters, medical personnel, and survivors.
His experience illustrates how schools provided stability and support to young people during a period of intense uncertainty.
Marriage to Dr. Kerry J. Kelly
Daniel A. Jost is married to Dr. Kerry J. Kelly, a physician who held a senior medical position with the New York City Fire Department.
Kelly’s professional responsibilities included supporting firefighter health and responding to emergencies affecting department personnel.
During the September 11 attacks, she helped establish emergency medical treatment facilities and subsequently advocated for firefighters experiencing health problems associated with their exposure to hazardous conditions.
Her career has been recognized through educational programs, historical accounts, and public-service initiatives.
The couple’s professional lives therefore connected two important institutions: New York City’s public schools and its fire department.
Although they had different responsibilities, both worked in occupations closely tied to public welfare. Their 2023 joint appearance at the 9/11 Memorial clearly illustrates those separate contributions.
Colin Jost and Casey Jost: His Two Sons
Daniel and Kerry have two sons who established careers in American entertainment.
Colin Jost: From Staten Island to Saturday Night Live
Colin Jost was born on June 29, 1982, and grew up on Staten Island.
He attended Regis High School in Manhattan before studying at Harvard University, where he joined The Harvard Lampoon, the university’s long-standing humor publication.
Colin joined the writing staff of Saturday Night Live in 2005 and became a co-anchor of the program’s Weekend Update segment in 2014.
His career combines television writing, comedy performance, and political satire.
Although it would be speculative to claim that his father’s teaching career directly produced his comedic success, the family’s connection to education is a documented part of Colin’s background.
Casey Jost: A Career Behind the Camera
Casey Jost, Colin’s younger brother, has developed his own career as a writer, producer, and entertainer.
He is best known for Impractical Jokers, the hidden-camera comedy program.
A December 2024 People profile describes Casey’s producing work and his professional relationship with the entertainment industry. It also confirms that the brothers grew up in a family whose parents worked in education and emergency medicine.
Both sons pursued creative professions, but their parents’ established careers followed distinctly different paths.
Community Leadership at the Staten Island Museum
Beyond the classroom, Daniel A. Jost has contributed to Staten Island’s cultural life.
The Staten Island Museum offers exhibitions, collections, and educational programming that address the borough’s history, art, and natural sciences.
An official museum announcement dated May 9, 2023, identified Daniel as chair of its Board of Trustees.
The museum’s 2024–2025 program subsequently listed him as immediate past chair.
This record establishes a meaningful community leadership role independent of his family connection to television.
Museum trustees provide institutional oversight and support organizations that protect collections, develop programs, and maintain public access to cultural resources.
Daniel’s association with the museum therefore adds another dimension to his public biography: involvement in preserving local knowledge and supporting educational opportunities outside traditional classrooms.
A More Personal Glimpse Through Colin Jost’s Stories
Although Daniel largely avoids the entertainment spotlight, occasional stories from his son reveal something about their relationship.
During a 2026 appearance on the SmartLess podcast, Colin discussed purchasing a retired Staten Island Ferry with comedian Pete Davidson.
Colin recalled informing his father about the unusual investment. Daniel reportedly asked whether his son had done his homework before buying it.
The exchange was lighthearted, but it offered a glimpse of a father whose educational background still surfaced in everyday family conversations.
It is a small anecdote rather than a comprehensive portrait. Nevertheless, it helps readers understand why Daniel occasionally appears in entertainment coverage despite having spent his working life outside that industry.
What Remains Private About Daniel A. Jost?
The available biographical record has limits.
Although Daniel A. Jost has participated in public programs and held documented leadership positions, he has not shared every aspect of his personal life publicly.
Reliable public sources do not establish his exact birth date, current age, detailed financial circumstances, or complete early-life history.
Financial estimates on celebrity-focused websites should not be mistaken for verified records of personal wealth.
Similarly, a photograph from a public event or an appearance alongside his sons does not establish details about his current residence, everyday routine, or private relationships.
A reliable profile should distinguish documented public activities from information that is simply unavailable.
Conclusion
Daniel A. Jost’s life offers a perspective that extends beyond his association with a famous comedian.
His years in public education, his firsthand account of September 11, and his leadership involvement with the Staten Island Museum provide a documented record of professional and community service.
His sons’ entertainment careers have introduced his name to a wider audience, but his own contributions belong to a different setting: classrooms, cultural institutions, and public education.
That broader story is what makes his biography meaningful. He is not simply Colin Jost’s father, but a retired educator whose experiences shape Staten Island’s educational and civic history.
